Transmission & Substation Engineer
Job Description
Sigil Partners is seeking an experienced Transmission & Substation Engineer to design, analyze, and support high-voltage transmission lines and electrical substations for utility and power-infrastructure projects. This individual will collaborate with engineering, project management, construction, operations, and utility stakeholders to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective power-system solutions.
The ideal candidate will bring strong electrical and power-engineering fundamentals, experience with transmission or substation projects, and the ability to support projects from planning and conceptual design through detailed engineering, construction, commissioning, and energization. This is a remote position within the United States that may require periodic travel to project sites, utility facilities, or client locations.
Responsibilities
- Design and support high-voltage transmission lines, substations, switchyards, and related power-system infrastructure
- Develop and review single-line diagrams, substation layouts, equipment specifications, grounding designs, bus configurations, and design calculations
- Perform electrical studies involving load flow, short-circuit conditions, grounding, insulation coordination, equipment ratings, and system performance
- Support the design and specification of transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, instrument transformers, bus systems, surge arresters, and auxiliary systems
- Contribute to transmission-line routing, conductor selection, structure design coordination, clearances, and line-performance evaluations
- Coordinate protection, control, metering, communication, and SCADA requirements with internal teams and external stakeholders
- Prepare technical specifications, engineering drawings, calculations, reports, material lists, and construction documents
- Review vendor drawings, equipment submittals, contractor documentation, and technical proposals
- Collaborate with civil, structural, protection and controls, environmental, permitting, construction, and commissioning teams
- Support project cost estimates, schedules, design reviews, risk assessments, and technical decision-making
- Provide engineering support during procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and energization
- Perform site assessments and resolve field-related design or construction issues
- Ensure designs comply with utility requirements and applicable safety, reliability, and engineering standards
- Maintain accurate project documentation and communicate technical information to clients, utilities, contractors, and project teams
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- 3+ years of professional experience in transmission, substation, utility, or power-system engineering
- Experience designing or supporting medium- or high-voltage electrical infrastructure
- Knowledge of substation equipment, transmission systems, grounding, clearances, insulation, and electrical safety
- Ability to develop and interpret single-line diagrams, electrical schematics, equipment specifications, and construction drawings
- Familiarity with applicable IEEE, ANSI, NESC, NEC, OSHA, and utility standards
- Experience with engineering software such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools, PSS/E, ASPEN, CDEGS, AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar platforms
- Strong analytical, technical-writing, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and coordinate effectively across multidisciplinary project teams
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment
- Ability to travel periodically to substations, transmission corridors, utility facilities, or construction sites
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer license or Engineer-in-Training certification
- Experience with transmission voltages of 69 kV or higher
- Experience with greenfield and brownfield substation projects
- Familiarity with protection and controls, relay settings, SCADA, telecommunications, and substation automation
- Experience with PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, TOWER, or related transmission-line design tools
- Knowledge of NERC reliability standards and utility interconnection requirements
- Experience supporting renewable-energy, battery-storage, grid-modernization, or utility-interconnection projects
- Experience with EPC, consulting-engineering, or investor-owned, municipal, or cooperative utility organizations
- Familiarity with construction sequencing, outage planning, commissioning, and energization procedures
