Embedded Systems Engineer
Job Description
Sigil Partners is seeking an experienced Embedded Systems Engineer to design, develop, test, and support embedded software and electronic control systems for automotive and transportation applications. This individual will collaborate with software, electrical, systems, mechanical, validation, and product teams to deliver safe, reliable, and high-performance vehicle technologies.
The ideal candidate will bring strong embedded-software fundamentals, experience developing production-grade firmware, and knowledge of automotive communication protocols, microcontrollers, real-time systems, and vehicle-development processes. This is a remote position within the United States that may require periodic travel to engineering laboratories, manufacturing facilities, proving grounds, supplier locations, or customer sites.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded software and firmware for automotive electronic control units and connected vehicle systems
- Develop low-level drivers, hardware-abstraction layers, diagnostics, bootloaders, communication services, and real-time application software
- Write efficient, maintainable, and testable code in C, C++, or related embedded programming languages
- Integrate embedded software with microcontrollers, sensors, actuators, vehicle networks, and electronic hardware
- Develop and maintain software requirements, architecture documents, interface specifications, design documentation, and test procedures
- Collaborate with systems, hardware, controls, mechanical, safety, cybersecurity, and validation engineers
- Support software-in-the-loop, model-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, bench, vehicle, and production testing
- Troubleshoot timing, memory, communication, performance, reliability, and hardware-software integration issues
- Participate in code reviews, design reviews, root-cause analyses, and engineering change-control processes
- Implement unit tests, integration tests, static analysis, debugging, and automated verification practices
- Maintain requirements traceability and support compliance with automotive software-development and functional-safety processes
- Support prototype development, vehicle integration, manufacturing launch, and production issue resolution
- Evaluate and incorporate emerging embedded, connected-vehicle, and automotive technologies where appropriate
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a related technical discipline
- 3+ years of professional embedded-software or firmware-development experience
- Strong programming experience with C and C++
- Experience developing software for microcontrollers, processors, or system-on-chip platforms
- Knowledge of real-time operating systems, interrupts, task scheduling, memory management, and embedded-system architecture
- Experience with automotive communication protocols such as CAN, CAN FD, LIN, Automotive Ethernet, or similar technologies
- Familiarity with embedded debugging tools, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, and hardware test equipment
- Experience with version control, build systems, code reviews, static analysis, and automated testing
- Understanding of hardware-software interfaces and the ability to read electrical schematics and technical datasheets
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently and effectively within distributed engineering teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AUTOSAR Classic, AUTOSAR Adaptive, or another automotive software architecture
- Familiarity with ISO 26262 functional safety, Automotive SPICE, MISRA C/C++, or related automotive standards
- Experience with Unified Diagnostic Services, diagnostic trouble codes, calibration tools, or over-the-air software updates
- Knowledge of ISO/SAE 21434, secure boot, encryption, authentication, or embedded cybersecurity
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, model-based development, or automatic code generation
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop platforms from dSPACE, NI, Vector, ETAS, or similar providers
- Experience developing systems for electric vehicles, battery management, powertrain, chassis, body controls, infotainment, telematics, or advanced driver-assistance systems
- Familiarity with continuous integration and automated testing for embedded-software environments
- Experience supporting automotive production launch and post-production issue resolution
