Embedded Software Engineer
Job Description
Sigil Partners is seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop, integrate, and support embedded software for aerospace and defense systems. This individual will collaborate with systems, hardware, avionics, test, cybersecurity, and manufacturing teams to deliver reliable, secure, and mission-critical software solutions.
The ideal candidate will bring strong embedded-software fundamentals, experience developing real-time or safety-critical applications, and the ability to contribute throughout the complete software lifecycle—from requirements and architecture through implementation, integration, verification, and deployment. This is a remote position within the United States that may require periodic travel or on-site work at engineering laboratories, manufacturing facilities, test locations, or secure customer sites.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded software and firmware for aerospace and defense systems
- Develop real-time applications, low-level drivers, board-support packages, hardware-abstraction layers, and communication interfaces
- Write efficient, reliable, maintainable, and testable code in C, C++, Ada, or related languages
- Translate system and software requirements into detailed designs and production-quality implementations
- Integrate embedded software with processors, sensors, actuators, communication buses, avionics equipment, and custom electronic hardware
- Collaborate with systems, electrical, hardware, safety, cybersecurity, test, and manufacturing engineers
- Develop unit, integration, regression, and hardware-in-the-loop tests
- Debug timing, memory, performance, communication, and hardware-software integration issues
- Participate in code reviews, design reviews, technical planning, and configuration-management processes
- Maintain requirements traceability, design documentation, interface-control documents, test procedures, and verification evidence
- Support laboratory integration, system testing, qualification, manufacturing, fielding, and production issue resolution
- Apply secure software-development, coding-standard, and vulnerability-remediation practices
- Ensure software complies with applicable contractual, safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline
- 3+ years of professional embedded-software or firmware-development experience
- Strong programming experience with C or C++
- Experience developing software for microcontrollers, processors, field-programmable gate array interfaces, or system-on-chip platforms
- Knowledge of real-time operating systems, interrupts, task scheduling, concurrency, memory management, and embedded-system architecture
- Experience with embedded communication interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, or similar protocols
- Familiarity with debuggers, emulators, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and embedded-development toolchains
- Experience with version control, configuration management, static analysis, code reviews, and automated testing
- Ability to read electrical schematics, hardware datasheets, software requirements, and interface specifications
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, documentation, and communication skills
- Ability to satisfy applicable export-control and security requirements
- Ability to travel periodically to laboratories, manufacturing facilities, test sites, or customer locations
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing avionics, flight-control, mission-computing, communications, navigation, radar, electronic-warfare, or unmanned-system software
- Experience with real-time operating systems such as VxWorks, QNX, Integrity, Deos, or FreeRTOS
- Familiarity with avionics interfaces such as MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, ARINC 664, SpaceWire, or Time-Triggered Ethernet
- Knowledge of DO-178C, DO-254, MIL-STD-498, MIL-STD-882, FACE, MOSA, or related aerospace and defense standards
- Experience with safety-critical or high-assurance software-development processes
- Familiarity with model-based development, MATLAB/Simulink, or automatic code generation
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, target simulation, or automated verification frameworks
- Knowledge of secure boot, cryptography, trusted computing, anti-tamper, or embedded cybersecurity
- Experience with Agile development in a regulated engineering environment
- Active or previously held U.S. security clearance
